Disney+ is officially reimagining Holes, giving the beloved Louis Sachar story a fresh twist as a gender-swapped TV adaptation. The series will follow a teenage girl sent to a detention camp where she’s forced to dig holes under the command of a ruthless Warden, all for a mysterious purpose. Liz Phang is set to helm the project as showrunner and executive producer, with Alina Mankin also joining as a writer and EP.
The original 2003 film adaptation, starring Shia LaBeouf and a star-studded cast, remains a fan favorite. This new version promises to bring a modern, inclusive take on the story while staying true to Sachar’s unique tone and themes.
Executive producer Drew Goddard, whose mother first recommended Holes in the late ’90s, expressed excitement about revisiting the material. “They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit,” he said, teasing surprises in store for the audience.
