Tennessee Football Hit a Speed Bump — But It Could Be a Blessing in Disguise for the Vols

The Tennessee Volunteers football program received a tough but somewhat expected blow on Wednesday night, as 2026 four-star defensive lineman Tyson Bacon officially announced his decommitment from the team.

“I want to start by thanking Coach Heupel, Coach Chop, Coach Garner, Coach Banks, Coach Ayers, and the University of Tennessee for accepting my commitment,” Bacon shared in a post on social media. “After much thought, I’ve decided to reopen my recruitment to ensure I make the best decision for my future.”

Bacon, a 6-foot-3, 263-pound standout from Hoover, Alabama, had been pledged to the Vols since October. However, his profile has risen significantly in recent months, attracting attention from major programs across the country. According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Bacon currently sits as the No. 34 defensive lineman in the 2026 class.

Even while committed, Bacon made it clear that he was still exploring his options. In a February interview with 247Sports, he said, “I’m still committed to Tennessee, but I want to enjoy the recruiting process and ultimately choose a place where I’ll thrive and fit in best. I want to make sure I’ve seen everything that’s out there.”

Bacon also told On3 in February that he’s “definitely” intrigued by Michigan, going as far as to say it “almost feels like home.”

Though Tennessee remains in contention, regaining Bacon’s commitment won’t be easy. The Vols are still expected to host him for an official visit in June, but it’s clear they’re facing increased competition for one of the top defensive prospects in the 2026 cycle.
