The Cure Former Iconic Band Member Reportedly Dies of Food Poisoning
Berlin, May 3, 2025 — Michael Dempsey, a musician best known for his early collaborations with The Cure, has reportedly died from acute food poisoning while attending a private art and music event in Berlin.
Dempsey, who played bass on The Cure’s debut album Three Imaginary Boys and briefly returned for a few special performances and studio sessions in later years, was 65. Though his time with the band was short-lived, he was often credited with helping shape the band’s earliest sound.
According to German authorities, Dempsey fell violently ill shortly after a catered dinner at the event, which featured several prominent artists and musicians. Despite emergency efforts, he passed away before reaching the hospital. Preliminary reports indicate that spoiled shellfish may be to blame, but a full autopsy and toxicology report are pending.
Fans and musicians have taken to social media to honor Dempsey’s contribution to post-punk music.
“He may not have been in the spotlight long, but Michael’s fingerprints are all over The Cure’s foundation,” said British music journalist Eliza Hart.
No foul play has been confirmed, though local officials are investigating the source of the contaminated meal. A tribute concert is already being discussed among former collaborators and admirers.
