Jason Oppenheim, star of “Selling Sunset,” accuses L.A. landlords of price gouging.

Jason Oppenheim is speaking out against price gouging by landlords in Los Angeles amidst the ongoing wildfires. In a recent interview on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the reality TV star and real estate expert shared a troubling story about a landlord who attempted to increase rental prices dramatically after the fires began. Oppenheim explained that a landlord initially listed a property for $13K a month, but when a client offered $20K due to the circumstances, the landlord countered with a demand of $23K—nearly double the original price.

Oppenheim criticized this behavior, emphasizing that while California has price gouging laws in place, they are being ignored in this case. He expressed concern for both the emotional and financial toll the fires are having on the community, and stressed that this is not the time for anyone to exploit the situation. The wildfires in Los Angeles have devastated over 40,000 acres and killed at least 16 people, with many losing their homes in affected areas like Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and West L.A.

Oppenheim’s comments reflect growing concern over exploitation in times of disaster, with local officials, including Sheriff Robert Luna and L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell, warning citizens to remain vigilant against scammers and opportunistic behavior.
