Drake has filed a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), alleging that the label promoted Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which he claims falsely portrays him as a pedophile. Drake asserts that UMG’s actions have endangered his safety and damaged his reputation.
In response, UMG has denied these allegations, stating that the claims are untrue and illogical. A UMG spokesperson emphasized the company’s significant investment in Drake’s career and its commitment to ethical promotional practices, asserting that they would not seek to harm any artist’s reputation.
The lawsuit also suggests that UMG’s promotion of Lamar’s song was part of a strategy to gain leverage in ongoing contract negotiations with Drake, whose current deal with the label is nearing its end. Despite these claims, UMG has denied any intention to devalue Drake’s profile.
This legal action follows Drake’s recent withdrawal of a separate petition against UMG and Spotify, in which he had accused the companies of artificially inflating the streams of “Not Like Us.” The withdrawal notice, filed on January 14, 2025, discontinues all legal proceedings without financial penalties for any parties involved.
