Henderson, the all-time leader in stolen bases, passed away at 65 on Saturday. Curry, who grew up in the Bay Area and plays for the Golden State Warriors, reflected on Henderson’s legendary status, especially within the Oakland community, where both the Warriors and Henderson made significant impacts.
Curry expressed his condolences, stating, “Growing up, as an adult in the Bay Area, especially what he did in Oakland, it resonates for me in terms of representing the Bay at a legendary, iconic level. Nobody like him.” Curry’s tribute was followed by a stellar performance, scoring 31 points, dishing 10 assists, and grabbing 3 rebounds in a 113-103 win over the Timberwolves.
Henderson’s family, including his wife and three daughters, mourned his loss, remembering him as a “legend on and off the field” who lived with integrity and a deep love for baseball. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred also paid tribute, noting Henderson’s influence, particularly in the league’s decision to alter base sizes to promote base-stealing. Henderson spent 14 years with the Oakland Athletics and had a decorated career with several other teams, including the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres.
