Three-time NBA champion Bill Belichick is a good fit to be the head coach of UNC: “How often do you get a Hall of Fame coach?”

Danny Green, former University of North Carolina (UNC) player, expressed his excitement about Bill Belichick taking over as the new head coach of the UNC football team. After finishing his legendary 24-year career with the New England Patriots, Belichick surprised many by applying for the Tar Heels’ head-coaching position. He even submitted a 400-page guideline for the team to follow. Now that the deal is official, Green is fully supportive of the move, calling it a great opportunity for the program.

“I’m on board. I’m all about it. I think it’s great,” Green said in an interview with TMZ Sports. He added, “How often do you get a Hall of Fame coach to coach one of your programs? I think it can only be a good thing.”

The hiring is a significant surprise, given Belichick’s lengthy and successful NFL career, but Green believes it will be a positive influence for the Tar Heels. UNC football has not reached the same level of fame or success as the basketball team, but the addition of Belichick could bring a new level of prestige to the program. Interestingly, Belichick’s coaching journey in college football might already have ties to the NFL, with former UNC quarterback Drake Maye being drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Green, who played under another legendary coach at UNC, Roy Williams, knows the impact of having a renowned coach at the helm. Green won a national title with Williams in 2009 and went on to have a successful NBA career, including winning three NBA championships before retiring in October.
