Mohamed Salah thinks that following Liverpool’s 6-3 victory over Tottenham, they need to improve in one crucial area.

Mohamed Salah, despite his outstanding individual performance in Liverpool’s 6-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on December 22, emphasized the need for improvement in defense. Salah scored a brace and provided two assists, but he pointed out that conceding three goals was difficult to accept. Speaking in a post-match interview, he stated, “Defensively we have to improve as a team. To concede three goals is quite hard. Virgil will speak better than me about that.” Salah’s remarks highlight his concern about Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities, even in the midst of an impressive attacking display.

The three goals conceded by Liverpool came from James Maddison (41′), Dejan Kulusevski (72′), and Dominic Solanke (83′). Tottenham outperformed their expected goals (xG) of 1.25, underscoring Salah’s point about defensive weaknesses. Additionally, Liverpool committed nine free-kicks, many of which were in dangerous areas around the penalty box, adding to their defensive struggles.

Despite his stellar form this season, with 18 goals and 15 assists in 24 appearances, Salah is keen to address the team’s defensive lapses. His individual performance has been exceptional, as he also became the first Premier League player to reach double figures for both goals (13) and assists (10) before Christmas, and he recently became Liverpool’s fourth all-time leading goalscorer with 229 goals.

In a separate interview, Salah also addressed questions about his contract, which is set to expire in June 2025. He stated there were no updates on a potential extension, saying, “No, no. It’s great to achieve that at such a big club. Wherever I am going to end my career I am happy about it.” While discussions regarding a new deal have not been confirmed, reports suggest that Liverpool is close to renewing Salah’s contract, with a potential two-year extension on the table.
