Phil Collins claims that his health has prevented him from playing the drums any longer.
Phil Collins has shared a heartfelt update about his health in the newly released documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, which premiered on December 18. The iconic musician, now 73, revealed that he is no longer able to play the drums due to the toll it has taken on his body after decades of performances.
“I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock,” Phil expressed, reflecting on the significant change in his life.
Phil retired from drumming in March 2022 after his final performance with Genesis. He explained, “If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything. If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack at it.” He added, “I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles,” acknowledging the profound adjustment he’s still processing.
Phil’s son, Nic Collins, who has taken over drumming duties for Genesis in recent years, spoke about the emotional and physical challenges his father has faced. “Musicians, people in bands in general had this thought that they were invincible,” Nic said. “But you don’t know it’s gonna take a toll in the long run.”
Phil’s illustrious career began in 1970 when he joined Genesis as their drummer. Over the decades, he became one of the most celebrated musicians in the world, transitioning to lead vocalist and embarking on a hugely successful solo career. Genesis reunited for tours in 2006 and 2022, with Phil’s final performance featuring Nic on stage alongside him, while his daughter, actress Lily Collins, watched from the audience.
The documentary offers an intimate look at Phil Collins’ legendary contributions to music and the challenges of stepping away from the instrument that defined much of his life. Fans can watch Phil Collins: Drummer First to celebrate his enduring legacy.
